Cormorant fishing symbolises summer at Chikugo River. Cormorant fishing season opens May 20th and people enjoy fishing until mid-October. A rare sight in Japan, this is the only place in Fukuoka Prefecture where people can experience this very unique form of fishing with cormorant birds.
Farmer’s Market Basaro
The market sells product directly from the local farms. Fresh vegetables and sweet shiwakaki (Persimmons) come highly recommended.
Yuzuki Shrine was built on the ruins of a castle from Sengoku period. The castle’s dried up moat remains visible. Come spring, the shrine is lit up at night to create a mystical atmosphere that draws many visitors to the renowned cherry blossom spot.
